FAQ

What is Cimitra?

Micro Administration

Cimitra is a console for organizing, executing and sharing valuable IT scripts

  • Enable help desk or other personnel to participate in routine IT tasks
  • Free up IT personnel to work on high-value projects
  • Increase administrators without increasing rights

Micro Applications

Cimitra enables IT to make simple low-code applications

Create a script in any language (PowerShell, Python, BASH etc), share it across any platform

Cimitra takes care of

  • Access control
  • Version control
  • Distribution
  • Security & Auditing

Cimitra is a solution that allows a person in IT to create a script, say . . . on a Windows server and then virtually share access to execute that script with one or more users. Cimitra can even pass parameters to a script if you so choose.

One of the best things about Cimitra is that you can use whatever scripting language and platform you would like. Unlike other solutions, that you might find in the IT ecosphere, Cimitra lets you use whatever scripting language or even homegrown program that you want. Cimitra is just the button and the wiring to a script wherever it is located.

When you log into the Cimitra Client you see the button to the script, and you can then choose to run the script.

Why Use Cimitra?

Security and time savings. Follow this idea for a minute . . .

A certain amount of processes in a modern IT environment are repetitive in nature.

  • A series of commands in a terminal session
  • A PowerShell script (or Python, BASH, etc.)
  • A series of icons and buttons to push to start a process

In order to share repetitive tasks, a person must have some kind of rights to a computer or device to execute things. Cimitra is about removing access to computers and devices and giving secure access to just a single script to be run. Now an IT person or non-IT person no longer needs access to a server someplace in order to run a repeatable series of steps. A person can be given access to just one script!

Can You Give me a Customer Example?

Willem Bagchus is an IT specialist at United Bank. At United Bank users are often moved to different departments as their roles change. United Bank uses Active Directory which is synchronized to the Microsoft Azure cloud for redundancy and backup. It’s a beautiful solution. However, at times a user’s object does not properly synchronize. Traditional Microsoft administrative tools cannot remedy the problem. Microsoft has given United Bank a PowerShell script that fixes the problem every time!

Here’s the rub though, the PowerShell script requires elevated administrative rights to Active Directory that Willem cannot grant to other people. So even though the Help Desk knows the telltale signs that “Willem’s PowerShell script” needs to run, Willem has no way to share his PowerShell script with others. So currently whenever this problem happens, Willem must RDP to a server where the PowerShell script is designed to run. Authenticate as himself. Pass 3 parameters specific to the problem user to the Powershell script. Run the script. Wait 10 minutes. And then call the Help Desk to let them know that they can now alter the user’s object so that it is properly synchronized.

With Cimitra, Willem can now allow Help Desk Personnel to run “Willem’s PowerShell script”, without requiring the server and Active Directory security access that Willem has in order to run the script.

The net result is that so much time is saved because the Help Desk no longer has to jockey for Willem’s time in order to get a repeatable task completed.

With Cimitra, Willem has several scripts and processes that he can share with Help Desk personnel and other IT Personnel.

How is Cimitra Implemented?

There are three parts to Cimitra

  • The Cimitra Server
  • Cimitra Agents
  • Cimitra Client

The Cimitra Server is hosted by Cimitra or a Cimitra authorized SaaS provider.  For North America, we recommend you consider Cimitra authorized SaaS provider; GroupLink. The Cimitra Server can also be hosted on your site.

The Cimitra Agent runs on servers, workstations or even devices. There are three primary platforms, Windows, Linux, and MacOS. Then Enterprise version of Cimitra will allow for running the Cimitra Agent on machines with ARM processors. For example, the Raspberry Pi uses an ARM processor.

The Cimitra Client is browser-based and uses responsive design to work on any kind of modern device you can think of. Cimitra also has a Command Line Interface (CLI) so you can use the Cimitra API to hook Cimitra into your existing infrastructure.

How Do I Distribute a Cimitra Application?

A person with Admin rights makes a Cimitra “App” which is simply a pointer to the location of a script you have created or use on a server or device that has a Cimitra “Agent” running on it.

The person with Admin rights then shares the Cimitra App with a user or a group of users. When the end-user logs into the Cimira “Client” in a browser, they will see the Cimitra App in their list of applications in Cimitra.

Do I Manually Distribute The Cimitra Client?

No. The Cimitra Client is a web-based application. It’s just a URL location.

Do I Manually Distribute The Cimitra Agent?

Yes. The Cimitra Agent is installed on servers, workstations or devices.

What if I Have Servers in a Cloud?

Sure, the Cimitra Agent can work with servers that are on-premise and in the cloud.

When Will Cimitra Be Available?

The Free Version and the Team Version of Cimitra will be available in November 2018.

We are currently working on a January 2019 release date for the Enterprise and Unlimited Versions of Cimitra.
